14 weeks today.

Another week, another milestone for me. Yesterday I had a consult with a perinatal doctor and an unexpected ultrasound. The ultrasound was great--the pictures not so much, but what I saw on the screen was fantastic. When the tech started, the baby's arm was in front of the face and hand above the head and I could see the little fingers--so great. Here are two pictures.

This one shows the little spine:

And this one is facing forward so you can see the two hemispheres of the little brain.

Baby is measuring exactly for the due date of June 4th at about 7 3/4 centimeters.

Then, for the real reason I was there: to discuss the fact that I am overweight and at a high risk for gestational diabetes. I have been taking metformin for the PCOS and it reduces risk of miscarriage in the first trimester. If I continue it, it also helps to stave off the gestational diabetes. But as I talked with the doctor what she would like is for me to control the insulin resistance with exercise and diet, which is a better idea in the long run for me. Metformin is a band-aid. I really just need to make the committment to myself and to the life inside me. So the plan is to eat a diet that is low on the glycemic index and to walk at least 30 minutes five times a week.

The practice I went to is the consulting doctors to the midwives. There are 8 doctors in the practice and it is luck of the draw which you see. Well, the one I saw has decided to take a personal interest in me. My next appointment will be with her. She wants to see how I am doing and I am appreciative of that. She also made a promise that she will lose 8 pounds by the time we meet again on January 5th. I will also be getting the anatomy scan at that appointment and hopefully we will find out: boy or girl.

Yay! So happy baby is doing well! I had GD with my DS. I am already starting this pregnancy heavier than my pre-pregnancy weight with him. Reading this post made me recognize that I need to get an early start on possible GD and not wait for it to develop again. They are giving me an early glucose test when I go for my next appt. on monday. Yay, for getting the cool doctor!
